Multicultural Education is designed to emphasise models of good practice which have been tried and tested by teachers in multicultural schools throughout Britain. The contributors illustrate the ways in which teachers are responding positively to the changing educational needs of multicultural, multiracial and multilingual schools in Britain. For them multicultural education is about being able to accept a challenge with commitment, and to initiate changes from within by questioning deep-rooted assumptions, attitudes and expectations. Much of the book is devoted to multicultural approaches for specific curriculum areas in primary and secondary schools: it deals with the issues and describes the practical approaches for teachers working in the classroom. The emphasis throughout is on ‘starting where the pupils are’ and building on what they bring to the classroom.
