The overthrow of corrupt dictatorship in Eastern Europe has been widely hailed as marking the end of socialism and the triumph of capitalism. Yet, argues the author, capitalism remains helpless in the face of the two great problems confronting the human race - that of the grotesque and widening gap between rich and poor, and the destruction of the natural environment.
